Joyce Kay Sneed Sullivan age 82 of Ider, Alabama died Friday, September 12, 2025 at her residence. Funeral services are Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at 11 AM CT at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ronald Brown officiating. A private burial will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery at a later date. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 7 PM CT and 9 AM until service time on Wednesday.
Kay was born June 17, 1943 in Murphy, North Carolina to parents, Warren W. and Gertrude Marie Chastain Massey. She was a 1961 graduate of Chattanooga High School. She attended UTC where she pledged with Phi Mu Sorority and developed many lasting friendships. She completed a degree in Education and began teaching at Lookout Valley High School for the next 30 plus years. While teaching there she meet and married John L. Sullivan who was the Football Coach. She later completed a degree in Counseling and received her Master’s Degree in Education. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church since she was a child. She had served on the Ider Library board and also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma and Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include brother-in-law, John Stephen Meagher, niece, Lindsey Kay Schaetzle, nephew, Michael Meagher, great-nieces and great-nephews, Scott Schaetzle(Jenna), Desti Schaetzle, Noah Schaetzle, John Patrick Schaetzle, Abigail Schaetzle, Joel Schaetzle, Mary Agnes Schaetzle, step-brother, Marion Kelley Massey(Sandy), extended family, Billy Dalton(Kim), Greg Dalton(Shaunta), Tyler Dalton, Tiara Hardman, Clayton Dalton, Hudson Dalton, Olivia Hardman, Ada Hardman, Evan Hardman, and her beloved dog and cats.
Over the last several years, Kay had developed special friendships with caregivers, Ricky Little, Lem and Margaret Ellis, Glenda Brewster, and Jo Sauls. They became extended family as they drove her to appointments, took her shopping, and cared for her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Warren W. Sneed, mother, Gertrude Sneed Massey, husband, John L. Sullivan, sister, Carol Sneed Meagher, step-father, Kelley Massey, half-brothers, Jimmy Sneed, Mack Sneed, and special friend, Grady Dalton.
