Janet Marie Chapman, 57, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, at her home in Trenton, Georgia, surrounded by her family.
Janet was a devoted single mother to her son, Matthew, and poured her heart into raising him. He was the center of her world, and her love for him guided every season of her life.
Despite years of health struggles, Janet remained determined and accomplished. She earned her Master’s Degree and taught online college courses, a role she deeply valued. When her health required her to step away, she did so with the hope that one day she would return to the work she loved.
Janet also spent many years serving as a substitute teacher, especially enjoying her time with elementary students at Lookout Valley Elementary School. Children fondly remembered her as “Miss Elmo,” a nickname earned through her playful spirit, joyful personality, and ability to make learning fun.
Above all, Janet loved her family. She will be remembered for her perseverance, her gentle humor, and the deep, steady love she gave to those around her. Whether teaching, encouraging a child with a smile, or quietly facing her own challenges, Janet lived with courage and grace, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Matthew Chapman; her mother, Betty Ann Raines; her sisters, Tammie Shavers and Mechele (David) Berry; her nephew and niece, Dakota (Brittany) Nichols and Kenadi (Garrett) Moore; her great-nieces, Emberly and Ellie Nichols; and her special brother, Tommy (Jennifer) Smith.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Terrell and Dorinda Raines, and Otis and Eva Chapman. Father, Larry S. Chapman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to support the family by donating through the Moore Funeral Home website.
A funeral service to celebrate Janet’s life will be held on Friday, February 6, at 12:00 PM at the Trenton Ministry Center, with Brother Randy Tinker and Sharlene Brogdon officiating. Janet will be laid to rest at Lakewood Memory Gardens West.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM and at the church on Friday from 10:00 AM until the hour of service.
Janet will be remembered for her perseverance, her playful spirit, and the deep, steady love she gave to those around her. Whether teaching, encouraging a child with a smile, or quietly fighting through her own struggles, she lived with courage and grace, leaving an imprint of kindness that will continue to be felt by all who knew her.
