Ellen Pearl Filyaw, age 80, passed away peacefully at her home in Bryant, Alabama, on Monday, February 9, 2026, with her devoted son by her side.
Born July 11, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Ruth Swafford. Ellen was known for her quiet strength, kind heart, and deep love for her family. She was first married to Steve Gowin, Sr., and together they raised five children. Following his passing, she later married Ed Filyaw. In her later years, she was lovingly cared for by her son, Steve, whose faithful presence and devotion brought her comfort. Even as her health declined, family remained the center of her life, and she often spoke with love and pride about her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.
Ellen is survived by her children, Steve Gowin, Jason Gowin, Rueben Gowin, and Cynthia Peterman; sister, Leona Rich; grandchildren, Tommy Gowin, Chassity Gowin, and Kendra Smith; and great-granddaughter, Abra.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Steven Carter Gowin and Edward Filyaw; son, Mitchell Gowin; and brother, Paul Swafford.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 13, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Eastern Time (3:00 to 6:00 PM Central Time) at the Bryant Chapel of Moore Funeral Home.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Brandy Romans and the compassionate staff of Enhabit Hospice for their loving care and kindness.
