Jessie Marie Potts

Jessie Marie Potts, age 70, of Flat Rock, AL passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 29th, 2026. Though our hearts were not ready, her family and friends are deeply grateful for the gift of loving and being loved by one of the best.  A celebration of Jessie’s life will be held at her home (418 Co Rd 237 Flat Rock, AL) on Saturday, March 14th, 2026 at 1 p.m. (cst). The family invites all who knew her to attend and share their favorite memories.

Jessie was born in Japan on November 17th, 1955 to George and Bette (Simms) Small. She dedicated her life to her family, friends, and her passion for Mother Earth. Jessie’s yard was a testament to her passion, a vibrant sanctuary of plants and vegetables that she happily shared with those she loved. Her infectious laugh and love for cooking brightened the lives of all who knew her.

Jessie loved fiercely and completely. She treasured her family, both blood and chosen, and protected those she loved with a strength that felt unstoppable. She gave the kind of hugs that stayed with you: never rushed, always full, wrapping you in warmth and goodness that was unmistakably hers.

Jessie found joy everywhere: in “tunes” and dancing, in science and stones, in teaching others about rocks and artifacts, and in her kitchen. She shared recipes and tips that had been passed down through the generations, ensuring that her legacy would remain long after she was gone. Much of what she cooked came from her own garden, nurtured from seed to table with care and love. Her spaghetti sauce, in particular, will remain unmatched in the memories of those lucky enough to taste it.

Jessie adored her grandchildren and was so proud of the young men and women that they are becoming. She loved sharing her passions with them and beamed with pride to see their common interests.

Jessie was immensely proud of her daughters. She poured her love and strength into them and taught them to stand together when life gets hard. She taught them grit and tenacity. She taught them to work hard and to never take “no” for an answer. She taught them grace and that it was okay to take a minute to gather yourself before you press on. But, ALWAYS press on.

Though this world lost a radiant light, we know that Papa Steve was waiting for her with a big hug and that they are dancing and laughing, surrounded by those who went before her.

She will be remembered always for her laughter, her strength, her warmth, and the way she loved so well.

Jessie is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (Jon) Harrell and Kadie Nowak; her grandchildren Tarquin and Kalysandra Harrell, Harper and Harlan Nowak and Isaiah Yordy; and a “flock” of friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Steve Potts; parents, George and Bette Small; sisters, Virginia Morgan, Stephani Ewing, and Bette Jane Small.
